SOJOURN is taking 50 people for a Civil Rights Tour on May 3. This program involves a one-day round-trip tour from Atlanta to Montgomery, AL led by Billy Planer of Etgar 36. During this educational and community-building trip we will learn with our LGBTQIA+, Jewish, and Black communities and discuss the impact of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. We will gain tools and strategies to create the change we wish to live in today. We will have a follow up conversation in late summer to discuss how the teachings of this experience have made an impact on our perspective on the world and in our daily lives.
Cost: $36 for bus, entry fees, tour guides, and lunch. (You can indicate if cost is a barrier later in the form!)
Itinerary:
7:30 AM(EST) Depart Atlanta
9 AM (CST) Driving tour and contextualization talk of Montgomery. Learn about the city’s history and why it was at the center of the Civil Rights movement on Dec. 1, 1955. Stand where the Civil Rights movement began. Learn about the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Visit the Memorial for Peace and Justice and reflect on an often-overlooked tragedy at the first national memorial for victims of lynching.

12:30 PM Equal Justice Initiative’s Sculpture Garden
1:45 PM Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum. Explore the evolution of racial oppression from slavery to mass incarceration.
3:30 PM Depart for Atlanta
7:30 PM (EST) Arrive back in Atlanta
